Sabbioneta

Sabbioneta is a town about 30 km (19 mi) north of Parma. It has been added to the World Heritage List in 2008 as a perfect example of practical application of Renaissance urban planning theories. Sabbioneta was founded by Vespasiano Gonzaga in the late 16th century. It occupied a strategic position in the heart of the Po Valley and it was the capital of a small state placed between great regional states. Thanks to his prince Sabbioneta become an ideal city and an important cultural city known as “little Athens” ever since its foundation. Do not miss the magnificent Ducal Palace and the incredible Teatro all'Antica,  the first free-standing, purpose-built theater in the modern world. It will astonish you with the perfect balance between architecture and wonderful decorations.

Sabbioneta is also known for its historic Jewish Ghetto and Synagogue, and in particular for its Hebrew printing-press.
