The Castle and the Jewish Typographic Tradition

Visiting Soncino is to come in a typical Lombard city with characteristical old palaces made in red bricks. Soncino is located on the right bank of the Oglio river and it has always been strategically important, a bulwark occupied from time to time by Milanese people and Venetians.

Soncino has preserved its historic center, enclosed by an imposing medieval city walls and its most famous monument is the astonishing Castle which dates back to 1473. You can visit the courtyards with frescoes, the rooms and have a walk on the still preserved walls.

Soncino is also famous because of an extraordinary family of Jewish printers that lived here for a while and made the city a European Capital for Jewish Culture. An exemple? The first complete Hebrew Bible was printed in Soncino on 1488. Today, this tradition can be discoverd by visiting the museum in the old printers house.
